Shelter Island

Vote YES on Ballot Proposal 1 to Protect Our Water

This Election Day, Shelter Island voters can take a huge step toward improving water quality and continuing to preserve unique places such as Sylvester Manor. On November 8th, vote YES on Proposal 1 to extend the Community Preservation Fund to 2050 and authorize projects to reduce the nitrogen pollution that threatens our health, economy and way of life. This measure does not increase taxes on local residents. It simply extends the existing tax paid by buyers of real estate that has raised almost $20 million since 1999 to preserve hundreds of acres on Shelter Island.

The Shelter Island Community Preservation Fund

  • Purchased development rights to over 80 acres of farmland at the historic Sylvester Manor
  • Preserved wetlands and old growth woodland for birds and other wildlife
  • Created preserves for trail-walking and storm water recharge
  • Will allow the Town to take action to reduce rust tides like the one that covered all of Peconic Bay in August. Rebates and incentives for nitrogen-reducing septic systems and other key projects can be funded if the measure passes.
